Michael Smith is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Communications Technology program at York College. Prof. Smith hosts a personal digital archive project blog on Commons titled It Cannot Be Trivial.
On the right side of the photo is J. Renwick Jackson, Jr., Professor of History and York’s first Dean of Students. He previously held those same positions at Queensborough. Jackson became President of St. Mary’s College of Maryland from 1969-1982. He is also an ordained Presbyterian minister, and while working as the minister at a Congregational Church on Long Island in the mid-1990s, he blessed a same-sex wedding and the controversy cost him that job. Jackson came to visit York about 6 weeks ago in mid-December 2011 – the last time he was at York was likely in its early Bayside days.
York’s founding President, Dumont Kenny, is on the left shaking hands with the student. He was President of Queensborough Community College prior to the establishment of York. Kenny left York in 1970 to become President of Temple Buell College (later known as Colorado Women’s College).

John, Many thanks for these wonderful captions, filled with the human stories often only hinted at in the photographs. Eric
