Michael Smith is an Assistant Professor and Director of the Communications Technology program at York College. Prof. Smith hosts a personal digital archive project blog on Commons titled It Cannot Be Trivial.
This series from BMCC – beginning with “Old School Big Data,” and continuing with “The Data Show,” and “Big Plans,” even including this shot, “How Much the Office has Changed” – has a sameness that’s hard to pin down. I don’t know if they were all pulled from the same file, or if we’re looking at a standard in style, a photographic zeitgeist. It doesn’t seem likely that all four images were the work of a single photographer, but you can sense the same purpose throughout: an institutional history of the new. There’s a sterility that’s almost surreal. Eric Metcalf
